Colusa, CA : Four people were dead Saturday when a car traveling on Highway 20 went off the road into a ditch on August 23rd 2014
Four people from Yuba City were killed Saturday when a car traveling on Highway 20 near Colusa went off the road into a ditch, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident, reported at 3:07 p.m., was on the eastbound highway about a mile and a half south of Niagara Avenue, south of the city of Colusa, officials said. In the single-car incident, the 2001 Honda Accord tumbled down the embankment and overturned. It came to rest upside down in the canal.
“When I pulled up, they had two of the victims out of the vehicle, up on the roadway, and they were taking out a third one,” said Sacramento River Fire Protection District Chief Jeff Winters, who was one of the first responders to the crash. “It was off the road, on its side, in the water, about three-quarters submerged.”
A CHP press release did not identify the cause of the crash, nor did it estimate how fast the car was traveling when it went off an embankment and overturned into a canal.
All four of the passengers who were killed were declared dead at the scene. Authorities did not release their names pending notification of next of kin. The victims were described as the driver, a man who was about 50, another male passenger who was about 50, and two women whose ages were estimated to be 40 and 50.
A fifth passenger — a woman identified as Suman Bala, 65, also of Yuba City — survived the crash and was transported to Colusa Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, the CHP said.
