One dead in Carter County

Kentucky State Police is investigating a fatal crash that happened just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, February 23 along KY State Route 1444 in Carter County.

According to a press release, 17-year-old Lewis J. Fankell of Grayson, KY, was operating a Pontiac Firebird eastbound on KY 1444 when he lost control of the vehicle, went over an embankment and hit a tree.

Fankell was pronounced dead at the scene by Carter County Deputy Coroner.Because of how severe the collision was, it hasn't been determined whether he had been wearing a seatbelt.

Alcohol usage is not suspected. The Carter County Sheriff's Department, Carter County EMS, Grayson Fire Department, and Carter County Coroner's Office assisted with the investigation.
