Randolph, MA : Municipal Court probation officer died in a single-car crash at Route 28 On Tuesday, June 14th, 2016

A Dorchester Municipal Court probation officer scheduled for arraignment Wednesday on rape charges died in a single-car crash on Tuesday, authorities say.
William M. Averill, 50, of West Roxbury, was killed when the car he was driving on Route 28 in Randolph “left the roadway, traveled onto the sidewalk, and struck a bridge abutment,” according to Massachusetts State Police.

He was the only person in the car.

Averill was scheduled for arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court on charges that he raped a woman he was assigned to supervise earlier this year. Prosecutors say the assault, which happened on Jan. 5, took place when the woman reported to

Averill’s office, according to the Associated Press. She was serving a one-year probation sentence.

Averill faced three counts each of rape and indecent assault and battery and one count of assault with intent to rape.

He has been on administrative leave during the investigatin.
