Afton, CA : Driver killed in I-15 crash near Basin Road on Friday morning, July 1, 2016

A motorist was killed in a collision on Interstate 15 near Afton just after 4 a.m. Friday morning, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash at approximately 4:14 a.m. on southbound I-15, just south of Basin Road.

Officer Jesse Argenbright said the crash was still under investigation Friday morning but that a southbound Chevrolet sedan was traveling in the No. 1 lane and for reasons still under investigation made a turn to the right and began to rotate out of control. The Chevy collided into a guardrail and came to rest across the southbound traffic lanes in an “easterly direction,” according to Argenbright.

“Approximately a minute later a silver Dodge Caravan traveling in the southbound No. 3 lane collided with the left side of the Chevy,” Argenbright said.

The driver of the Chevy was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the deceased will be released pending notification of next of kin.

Argenbright said five other victims of the crash complained of pain, but had no additional information on their injuries. Drugs and alcohol didn't appear to be a factor in the collision, Argenbright said.
