Florence, AL : An elderly man died before his pickup continued onward out of control and smashed into a home at Morgan Street On Tuesday, May 24th, 2016
Police said an elderly man may have died before his pickup continued onward out of control and smashed into a home on Morgan Street.
Bryce Hunt, 83, of Florence was the only occupant of the pickup, and nobody at the house was injured, officials said.
Police Chief Ron Tyler said Hunt was pronounced dead at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital. Tyler said the investigation is continuing.
Officials are not sure if Hunt died before or after the crash, which occurred about 10:30 a.m. Tyler said the victim could have experienced some type of medical condition while driving along Morgan Street, which is near Huntsville Road.
His vehicle ran off the road, leveled a mailbox, and hit a Jeep that was parked in a driveway, spinning the Jeep around.
The truck continued onward to the yard next door at 2717 Morgan St., and ran across the yard before ultimately slamming into the house.
Kenneth Parrish, who lives in the house, said he and one other person were in the house at the time, but were not hurt.
Parrish said they were in the living room and noticed dust kick up in the front yard, "and then, boom."
"All I know is a truck came across my yard and inside my house," he said, as he stood near the yellow police tape that roped off the scene. "I was sitting in the living room, just about right next to where he went in. We jumped up and ran to the door."
Parrish is recovering from recent back and shoulder surgery and uses the assistance of a guardrail to get in and out of the house. The rail was damaged in the wreck.
Part of the front of the truck was in the house, leaving a gaping hole in the front of the dwelling. A window of the house was knocked out, and pieces from the block facade were scattered about.
Two sets of dirt tracks leading to the black pickup gave evidence to the path it took across the yard before smashing into the house. The right front section of the truck appeared to incur the heaviest damage.
