Salem,OR : Fatal crash closes Hwy 22 on December, Friday 16th 2017
Highway 22 East was closed near Idanha Saturday after Oregon State Police responded to a fatal crash involving a fuel truck around 11 p.m. Friday.
An investigation revealed that the fuel truck lost traction and rolled over, blocking the highway, according to Oregon State Police.
The fuel tank then ruptured and caught fire. It contained more than 11,000 gallons of fuel, and it is unknown how much burned or was lost in the ground or river.
The driver, Ronald Scurlock, 58, of Bend, was pronounced dead at the scene.
An Idanha-Detriot Fire Protection District fire engine also lost traction on the icy road and rolled onto its side while responding to the scene. Other collisions occurred but no injuries were reported.
This is an ongoing investigation.
Highway 22 in the Santiam Canyon will remain closed indefinitely between milepost 55 at the east end of Idanha to the Santiam Junction.
