FREEPORT, ME : Milk truck crash on I-295 kills driver, spills 100s of gallons on Saturday, January 14th 2017
A Canaan man died Saturday morning after the tanker truck he was driving collided with a car that had spun out of control on Interstate 295.
Richard A. Clark, 70, had attempted to maneuver his truck that was hauling milk to avoid crushing a Toyota Corolla that had spun out of control around 10 a.m. Saturday near the Freeport exit, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said late Saturday afternoon.
Both vehicles struck the median guardrail, and Clark’s tanker overturned, coming to rest in the median and spilling thousands of gallons of milk. Clark died instantly, McCausland said.
The driver of the car, Ashley Williams, 27, of Woolwich, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with minor injuries.
The tanker was removed from the crash site at about 4 p.m. after some of its cargo was removed.
State police have not determined why Williams lost control of her Toyota Corolla, which was totaled, and the crash remains under investigation.
The north and southbound lanes of I-295 were reduced to one lane for about six hours as state police investigated the crash and the truck was removed from the scene.
