WORCESTER, MA : Two people were in critical condition a head-on crash on May, Tuesday 9th 2017

Two people were in critical condition Wednesday after a head-on crash on Belmont Street near Skyline Drive about 8:15 Tuesday night.

Police said four people were taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus after the two-vehicle crash between a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu sedan and a 2001 Nissan Xterra sport utility vehicle. Two of the four injured people were treated and released.

Officers from the Operations Division responded to the crash and found a 19-year-old from Shrewsbury unresponsive on the ground.

A second unresponsive man, later identified as a 21-year-old from Oxford, was inside the Chevy. Another man, also 21 and from Shrewsbury, had been in the Chevrolet during the accident, but was on his feet outside the car when officers arrived, police said.

The driver of the Nissan, a 47-year old Worcester man, was alert and conscious after the crash. Both vehicles had heavy front-end damage.

Police said their preliminary investigation revealed that the Malibu was traveling west on Belmont Street (Route 9) and the Xterra was headed east on Belmont Street. The crash occurred in the westbound lane of Belmont Street at Skyline Drive. After the collision, the Chevy continued moving and smashed head-on into an electrical box.

The crash, which closed Belmont Street, is being investigated by the Crash Reconstruction Unit.
