An 80-year-old Oregon man was killed when a semi-truck hit his car on Interstate 5 northbound near milepost 86 late Sunday, according to Washington State Patrol.
The crash occurred just before 12 a.m. The semi-truck driver, a 36-year-old Yelm man, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Investigators believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, according to Trooper Brooke Bova.
State patrol identified the deceased as Edward Chambers of Beaverton, Oregon.
A 19-year-old man from Hillsboro who was a passenger in the car was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has been released. According to the passenger, the car was overheating and the driver was trying to get to the shoulder from the right late when the car was hit by the semi.
Bova said as workers were clearing the scene Monday morning, an inattentive driver struck a DOT truck. No injuries were reported in that crash.
Another collision took place in the backup during the investigation, Bova tweeted.
