Phoenix, AZ : Baby delivered following crash on I-17 in Phoenix has died on April, Sunday 9th 2017
A baby delivered Sunday afternoon following a crash on Interstate 17 in Phoenix has died, and officials say a criminal investigation is ongoing.
The newborn died shortly after being delivered by Caesarean section, according to Trooper Kameron Lee, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Lee said the ongoing criminal investigation prevented him from providing further details Monday morning.
The infant's mother was 8 months pregnant and became trapped in the driver's seat following the three-car collision on I-17 near Camelback Road. One of the vehicles, a minivan, had been rear-ended in the crash.
When fire crews arrived, they found bystanders had already helped get the woman's children, ages 14, 8 and 3, out of the vehicle. But the 30-year-old woman was trapped behind the steering wheel, and it took fire crews about 15 minutes to free her, the Phoenix Fire Department said. She was then taken to a hospital where she gave birth. The woman also suffered broken bones in both her legs and one arm. She was listed in critical condition on Sunday, the Fire Department said.
Her children's injuries were not life-threatening, the Fire Department said.
