Jersey City, NJ : 1 dead, 1 critical in early morning Jersey City crash on Sunday, 28th February 2021

A Jersey City man died and and another is in critical condition after a single-car crash on Christopher Columbus Drive in Jersey City early Sunday, authorities said.

The fatal crash, the third of 2021 in Hudson County, is being investigated by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit, a division of the county prosecutor’s office, and the Jersey City Police Department.

A passenger, 30-year-old Jesus Gonzalez, didn’t survive the crash, while the driver, also 30 and from Jersey City, is listed in critical condition, the prosecutor’s office said. The crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. on Columbus Drive near the Merseles Street split.

According to the initial investigation, the driver was traveling westbound on Columbus Drive approaching the roadway split when his vehicle, a 1996 Honda Civic, struck the attenuator-protected guard rail. Gonzalez died at the scene, while the driver was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center.
