Corvallis,OR : Albany man dies in Highway 20 crash on May, Thursday 10th 2018

An Albany man died Thursday evening in a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 20, about four miles west of Albany near Granger Avenue.

According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, 61-year-old Darrell Johnson was driving east on the highway, east of the Granger intersection, in a 1996 Ford Taurus. For unknown reasons, he struck a large pole on the northwest corner and came to rest against it.

Witnesses and a deputy attempted first aid, but were unsuccessful. The Taurus caught fire, and the Corvallis Fire Department responded to extinguish it. Johnson was the vehicle's only occupant.

The Benton County Multi-Agency Traffic Collision Investigation Team responded to the scene. It was unknown if alcohol or controlled substances were factors in the accident.

The crash closed Highway 20 for about three hours.
