A tractor-trailer driver died in a crash that closed U.S. 421 for five hours in Harnett County on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The crash happened after 4:30 p.m. along U.S. 421 near Sloan and Dean roads, which is about five miles north of Lillington, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The incident happened when the truck was heading north on U.S. 421, but crossed the center line and wrecked on the southbound side of the highway, officials at the scene said.
After the truck crashed the vehicle caught fire, but the fire was later extinguished.
Also after the crash, there was a fuel leak from the truck’s gas tanks, which briefly flowed into a nearby creek, according to officials.
U.S. 421 was reopened just after 9:30 p.m.
