A semitrailer driver was killed Thursday afternoon after striking the rear of a Wayne County Road Commission truck on Interstate 275, according to Michigan State Police.

Police said the driver of the tanker truck was traveling in the right lane and passed a Wayne County Road Commission truck on the shoulder about 2 p.m. Thursday. The truck had its arrow board activated.

“The semi driver continued in the right lane and struck the rear of a second Wayne County Road Commission vehicle that was stopped in the right lane with its arrow board activated,” police wrote in a statement Thursday.

The driver of the tanker truck died instantly, police said. The driver’s name is not being released pending family notification.

As a precaution, the driver of the road commission truck was transported to a local hospital.

The crash caused the freeway to remain closed until about 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Twitter post.

The road crew was removing debris from the side of the freeway at the time of the crash, Wayne County Spokesman Ryan Bridges said.
