A Dayton woman was killed Wednesday morning when a car ran into her disabled vehicle stopped on Rt. 23 in southern Marion County, the State Highway Patrol reported.

Dorothy E. Vogel, 82, died in the crash north of Waldo.

The patrol’s Marion post received a call around 7 a.m. about a disabled vehicle stopped in traffic on Rt. 23 north of Newmans Cardington Road. Troopers were responding when a call came in three minutes later from an Ohio State University police officer who had stopped at a crash in the same area.

When troopers arrived, they found a wrecked 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup facing southbound in the right northbound lane and a 2012 Nissan Murano off the east side of the road.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Vogel was in the pickup when it was struck from behind by the Nissan driven by Phillip S. Sutton, 46, of Delaware. The impact spun the pickup around and sent the Nissan running off the road.

Vogel, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Coroner Marc Comianos. Sutton, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated at the scene.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
