Elkhart, IN : West Virginia woman killed in a car crash on US 20, east of CR 21 on Saturday afternoon, June 4, 2016
A West Virginia woman was not wearing a seat belt when she was killed in a car crash late Saturday afternoon near Elkhart, police said.
Neither the woman, 31, whose name was not released pending family notification, nor a 36-year-old male passenger were wearing seat belts when the white SUV driven by the victim ran off the road at about 6:15 p.m. and collided with a guard rail on U.S. 20 east of CR 21 two miles west of the Elkhart city limits, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department stated in a release.
The victim, of Buckhanon, W.Va., was pronounced dead at Elkhart General Hospital, where she had been transported with head and chest injuries. The male passenger was also taken to Elkhart General Hospital and treated for minor facial injuries, police said.
The vehicle, a 2004 Suzuki Vitara with West Virginia plates, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 20 when it left the south side of the roadway then struck a post and the end of a guard rail. The SUV sustained heavy damage to the front, police said.
“Neither the driver nor passenger was wearing seat belts at the time of the crash,” the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department crash investigation team.
