Lakeland, FL : Lakeland man dies in single-car accident on US 98 South on Monday, February 13th 2017

One person has died and another is hospitalized after the driver of a white, 2000 Ford F150 truck lost control at about 2:10 p.m. Monday while southbound on U.S. 98, north of Bartow.
Ralph Hightower of Lakeland, 80, died at the scene of apparent blunt-force trauma, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
His passenger, 57-year-old Glenn Hamilton of Lakeland, received minor injuries and was transported to Bartow Regional Medical Center. He was treated for bruises and abrasions and released.
According to police reports, Hightower was in the inside lane when he drove off the roadway into the median. He over-corrected back toward the roadway, then back again toward the median.
Reports say Hightower lost control at that point and the truck began to rotate counter-clockwise across the median. As it reached the center area of the median, the truck began to roll sideways at least once, coming to a final rest right side up and facing east. It was in the middle of the roadway blocking all three northbound lanes.
Reports say both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Impairment, excessive speed and driver distraction are not suspected.
Northbound U.S. 98 was closed at the scene of the crash for approximately three hours. The southbound lanes were converted for traffic in both directions by the Florida Department of Transportation for the duration of the investigation.
The crash happened two weeks after a similar one-car fatality less than a mile north on U.S. 98, in which a 33-year-old Wauchula woman was northbound, lost control of her Jeep and rolled across the median into the southbound lanes. She was ejected from her car, and a southbound motorist ran over her. Amanda N. Robinson, who was alone in the car, died at the scene and there were no other injuries.
