Austin, TX : A two-vehicle crash on Texas Highway 31 on Saturday, July 29, 2017

A two-vehicle crash on Texas Highway 31 East caused one fatality Saturday night, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Troopers responded to the crash, 11 1/2 miles east of Tyler, about 7:13 p.m. The preliminary report shows that a 2012 Nissan Versa driven by 25-year-old Marco Antonio Ponce-Luna, of Greenwood, Louisiana, was traveling east on Texas Highway 31 and attempted to turn left into a private drive.

A 2015 Jeep Wrangler driven by 23-year-old Megan Mathis was westbound on the same roadway. The vehicles struck in the westbound lane. A passenger in the Nissan, identified as 24-year-old Nhi Tran, of Tyler, was pronounced dead a few hours later at East Texas Medical Center-Tyler.

Ponce-Luna was taken to ETMC-Tyler. Mathis and her passenger, 20-year-old Johnetta Preston, of Tyler, were both treated and released from Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.
