Columbia City, IN : 1 dead, 1 injured in crash on Old Trail Road just east of Whitley County Road 300 East on Monday, 6th January, 2020

A Whitley County man died this morning and a man was badly injured when the car they were in crashed and overturned just northeast of Columbia City, police said.

Indiana State Police said Dakota Lee Messmann, 23, of rural Columbia City, died at the scene the crash on Old Trail Road just east of Whitley County Road 300 East.

Messmann was a passenger in a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Donnie Jackson, 30, also of rural Columbia City.

Police said Jackson was driving east on Old Trail Road when he passed another eastbound vehicle at a high rate of speed in a no-passing zone about 7:15 a.m.

Jackson's vehicle left the road to the north. Jackson over-corrected as the vehicle landed on the pavement but lost control and struck a tree on the south side of the road, police said.
