Putnam County, IN : One dead after 3-vehicle collision on I-70 in Putnam County on Monday afternoon, July 14, 2014

The driver of a semitractor died at the scene of a three-vehicle collision today in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 in Putnam County.

Indiana State Police and Putnam County emergency agencies responded to the crash near the 30-mile marker at 12:36 p.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed that westbound traffic was slowing for a construction zone that began near the 29-marker near the Clay County line. Traffic was required to move into the right driving lane. A westbound semi failed to slow and rear-ended another tractor-trailer in the rear, forcing that semi into the rear of the passenger car. The driver of the semi that failed to slow was pronounced dead at the scene. Both semis were not loaded at the time of the crash.

ISP reports that the deceased driver is a male believed to be from Indiana. Positive identification had not been made Monday afternoon. An autopsy was set for Tuesday.

The two other drivers involved were transported to Putnam County Hospital at Greencastle with non-life-threatening injuries.

Thomas Scorg, 59, of Parke, Colo., was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier passenger car. It was rear-ended by a semi driven by Arron Smith, 50 of Dillsboro, Ind.

Both westbound lanes of the highway are closed due to the crash, with traffic diverted onto U.S. 231 north to U.S. 40.

The westbound passing lane is expected to open around 5 p.m. The westbound driving lane is expected to open later.
