A mangled chain link fence, demolished wood guardrail, tire tracks in the grass and various fence and car pieces lay in front of the Hopewell Park Playground- the remains after a Taunton man nearly struck the playground while driving up to 90 miles per hour drunk in a Mercedes Friday evening, police said.

Keith P. Carvalho, 24 of 42 Union St., was arrested on charges of operating under the influence, leaving the scene of property damage, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and three counts of assault and battery on a police officer, police said. After crashing through the fence, just yards away from the popular playground structure, Carvalho resisted arrest and at the police station injured one of the officers, according to the report.

Police were called to Hopewell Park Playground, at the corner of Hamilton and Hopewell streets around 6:35 p.m. for a report of a motor vehicle crash.

At the scene was a black Mercedes sitting on the grass area within the park. About 20 feet of wood guardrail and 60 feet of the chain link fence, which surrounds the playground area, were mangled, ripped, twisted and unhinged. Around 30 to 40 people surrounded the wreck.

Police searched the area and did not locate anyone struck in the crash.

One witness stated that while driving down Hamilton Street towards West Britannia she saw the Mercedes in the middle of the road, driving at an estimated 80 to 90 miles per hour. The witness said she was forced off the road.

The crowd pointed at a man, later identified as Carvalho, walking away from the scene unsteady, stumbling and looking as if he was walking in circles, police said. Witnesses told police that the man was the operator, according to the report.
