VANDERBURGH CO, IN : Driver reached for tobacco can just before deadly collision with jogger on Tuesday, 20th September 2016
According to the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office, the victim has been identified as 51-year-old Janet S. Gries, of Darmstadt.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. on Boonville-New Harmony Road near Gilles Lane, west of the 4H Center, in Darmstadt.
We're told Gries was jogging west on Boonville-New Harmony Road when she was hit by an eastbound truck, driven by 22-year-old Coleman Matthew Sheridan, of Evansville. Sheriff Dave Wedding says Gries was wearing a reflective vest.
She died from internal injuries resulting from blunt force to the chest, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Lockyear.
Deputies say Sheridan told them that he had picked up a can of tobacco from the floor of his truck prior to the collision.Sheridan was taken to an area hospital for a drug/alcohol test, which is standard procedure.
The road was closed from St. Joe to Trinity Lutheran School while crews worked the scene. It is now back open.
