Valdosta, GA : Woman died in a two-vehicle crash at 200 block of Norman Drive On Wednesday, May 4th, 2016

A Valdosta woman died as a result of an two-vehicle crash Wednesday, leading to charges against one of the drivers, according to authorities.

Around 9 a.m., Valdosta police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Norman Drive near the offices of Colquitt EMC in reference to an accident with injuries. Two vehicles, a GMC Terrain and a Ford F150, crashed head-on, causing the

Ford F150 to flip upside down, according to Valdosta police.

The driver of the GMC, identified as Anthony Curtis Smith, fled the scene on foot, police said.

Bystanders chased Smith down and walked him back to the accident scene where he was later detained by police, according to a police department press release. A witness said she saw a man who left the scene of the accident being walked

back by an employee of Mediacom, located near the wreck scene.

The Valdosta Fire Department and EMS extracted the driver from the Ford F150; they were taken to South Georgia Medical Center with two fractured legs and was in stable but critical condition Thursday afternoon, police said.

A passenger in the GMC, Shelby Morton, 22, of Valdosta, was conscious on-scene and taken to the hospital, police said. However, she died after emergency surgery, said Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson.

The Valdosta Police Traffic Unit began investigating the accident and determined that Smith, who was traveling southbound on Norman Drive, crossed over the center line into the northbound lane and hit the Ford F150 head-on, police said.

Smith was charged with driving with a suspended license, driving on the wrong side of the road, leaving the scene of an accident and homicide by vehicle and was taken to the Lowndes County Jail, according to the police.

“The Valdosta Police Department would like to extend our sympathies to the victims and their families who have suffered from this senseless tragedy. We would also like to thank the brave citizens who jumped into action and detained Anthony

Curtis Smith who fled from the accident scene on foot”, said Capt. Kari Williams.
