Craig, CO : Man killed in an early-morning crash on Tuesday, June 27, 2017

Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg on Tuesday identified the man killed in an early-morning crash on U.S. Highway 40 as 42-year-old Todd Edwards, of Hayden.

The crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, about 15 miles west of Steamboat Springs.

According to Colorado State Patrol, Edwards was driving his 2008 Jeep Wrangler when he hit an elk crossing the highway.

The Jeep went off the left side of the road and off a very steep cliff. The Jeep rolled down the cliff and landed on the railroad tracks.

Edwards was ejected from the Jeep and pronounced dead at the scene.

CSP does not believe Edwards was wearing a seat belt.

Ryg said Edwards was driving back from Denver, where he had a medical procedure done related to an incident a couple weeks ago. Ryg said Edwards was on Rabbit Ears Pass when he fell off a guard rail while trying to get a cell signal.

Edwards was hurt badly enough that he had to be flown to Denver.

Ryg said Edwards’ family lived in Michigan. He notified them of the death Tuesday morning.

Edwards had a girlfriend and no children, Ryg said.
