Syracuse, NY : Driver flees scene after starting 4-car crash on I-690 westbound on Saturday, September 27, 2014
Syracuse police are looking for a black Lexus believed to have started a four-vehicle crash on I-690 westbound that sent two to the hospital.
Around 7:55 a.m., the Lexus sped up behind three vehicles in the right lane of I-690 westbound between Teall Avenue (Exit 14) and the South Townsend Street off-ramp (Exit 13), city police Sgt. Gary Bulinski said.
The Lexus attempted to pass all three vehicles, but lost control and struck the front vehicle, a 2005 Jeep Cherokee, Bulinski said.
The Jeep, driven by a 23-year-old Syracuse man, lost control. The middle car, a 2005 Ford, driven by a 25-year-old woman, then struck the Jeep. A 2014 Buick, driven by a 69-year-old man, the last car in the row, then stuck the Ford.
The driver of the Jeep was not injured, but a 20-year-old female passenger suffered neck and back pain and was taken to Crouse Hospital. The driver of the Ford had to be extricated from the vehicle and was also taken to Crouse Hospital with neck and back pain.
The driver of the Buick was not injured, Bulinski said.
The Lexus kept going and exited the highway at the South Townsend Street off-ramp, Bulinski said.
The two right lanes were closed following the crash. They reopened around 9 a.m., Bulinski said.
"It turned into a mess out there," Bulinski said.
