Fort Worth, TX : Scooter rider died in a hit-and-run crash on early Thursday morning August 7th 2014

Police in Fort Worth are investigating a hit-and-run crash which left a motorized scooter rider dead. Around 2:15 a.m. Thursday, witnesses say an SUV, possibly a Chevy Tahoe, struck the scooter, which had its hazard lights on, from behind as the two were driving southbound on Interstate 35 near Long Avenue. The SUV ran over the victim, who was pronounced dead on the scene. The scooter was then dragged by the SUV for some distance and was found about 2,500-3,000 feet away on the service road of the next exit, Palpurt. Police say the driver stopped, removed the scooter from under the SUV and took off. Thursday afternoon, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as 59-year-old Timothy Campbell. The man lived in Fort Worth. Just hours before Campbell was killed on I-35W, Don Shisler of the Union Gospel Mission said the victim was voted “Resident of the Month” at the shelter, and that Campbell was well known and well liked. Friends say Campbell was a faithful member of Wedgwood Baptist Church for many years. A member of his Sunday school class said Tim Campbell prayed for them by name every day. Campbell was a father and a grandfather who once had a good professional career. A close friend told News 8 he was starting to find his way again, holding a steady job in a country club kitchen. It earned him enough to buy the scooter he died on. Police are still searching for the driver of the SUV. Police say Campbell had every right to be driving his scooter on the highway.
