CHELMSFORD, MA : Man dies after crash in water off Route 3 in Chelmsford on Sunday, 4th November 2018

A 63-year-old Bristol man killed after a single-vehicle crash on Route 3 late Sunday afternoon may have suffered a medical incident before the crash, police say.

Emergency crews found the vehicle "partially submerged in swampy water" on the southbound side of the highway near Route 129 shortly after 5 p.m., according to a statement from Chelmsford Fire Chief Gary Ryan.

The vehicle, a 2011 BMW X3, exited the right side of the roadway, according to a State Police press release. An off-duty trooper, who called in the crash, entered the water to help the driver.

The unresponsive driver, the vehicle's only occupant, was pulled from the vehicle through the help of multiple emergency responders. CPR was performed and the man was transported to Lowell General Hospital.

"Unfortunately, despite lifesaving efforts, the victim age 60 sadly passed away," Ryan stated in an email.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver may have had a medical incident which caused the crash.

The name of the driver will be released after his family has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation, according to police.
