Woodstock, IL : Two critically injured in crash near Woodstock early Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Authorities say failure to yield right of way led to an early Tuesday crash involving a semi-truck and a minivan near Woodstock that critically injured two people.

The crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Route 14 and Hughes Road in unincorporated McHenry County. A 2009 Volvo semi pulling a partially loaded 53-foot trailer was traveling west on Route 14 and struck a 2005 Dodge Caravan traveling north on Hughes Road in the intersection. A preliminary investigation revealed the Dodge failed to yield right of way from the stop sign, authorities said.

Alcohol did not play a role in the crash, authorities said.

"There was prolonged extrication for both drivers," Woodstock Fire Rescue Capt. Brendan Parker said.

The drivers and sole occupants -- a 67-year-old Richmond woman driving the Dodge and a 65-year-old Arlington Heights man driving the semi-truck -- sustained life-threatening injuries and were taken to Centegra Hospital in McHenry, authorities said.

The driver of the Dodge was later transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

No air bags were deployed in either vehicle and both drivers were wearing seat belts, authorities said.

A firefighter also was injured during the extrication and taken to Centegra with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Firefighters from Harvard and Crystal Lake assisted at the scene, while McHenry and Huntley firefighters covered the Woodstock fire station.

Route 14 was closed at that intersection for several hours while the McHenry County Sheriff's Office investigated the crash. The road has since reopened.

An investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office Traffic Crash Investigations Unit and Illinois State Police.
