WHEATON, IL : Ohio teen killed in track-and-field accident on April, Saturday 22nd 2017
A teen from the Cincinnati area was killed Saturday after being struck during the hammer throw at a track and field competition at Wheaton College, reports say.
The Chicago Tribune reports Ethan Roser, 19, was volunteering at the track event when he was accidentally hit by a hammer. Roser was a freshman studying to be a minister.
"We know he's with Jesus," Roser's father, the Rev. Mark Roser, tells the Tribune. "And the fact that he's in paradise is a great source of comfort to us."
Roser was taken to a hospital but died of his injuries, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
The hammer is a metal ball attached to a grip with a steel wire. It weighs 16 pounds for the men's competition and 8.8 pounds for the women's.
According to WCPO Channel 9, Roser was a 2016 graduate of Mason High School in Mason, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. Wheaton College is located about 25 miles west of Chicago.
"We are deeply grieved, but, because of our faith in Christ, not without hope," Wheaton College President Philip Ryken said in a statement, according to the Tribune. "We ask people to pray for Ethan's family, his friends, and our campus community."
