Indianapolis, IN : Driver in fatal crash on Indiana 931 between Osborn and New roads on Tuesday, 10th December, 2019

A 54-year-old Jones, Mich., man, who was involved in a crash Tuesday on Indiana 931 south of South Bend that killed a construction worker, was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death.

The crash occurred just before 10 a.m. on Indiana 931 between Osborn and New roads, according to police.

St. Joseph County Sheriff William Redman confirmed that Gary Carnicom was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He remained in custody as of Tuesday evening.

Carnicom was driving a van heading north on Indiana 931 in the right lane entering into a construction zone, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office. Cones and arrows instructed drivers to merge to the left.

Carnicom allegedly continued to drive in the outside lane and struck a 65-year-old worker, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The worker’s identity was not released.
