Springfield, Massachusetts
Three relatives ages 8 to 18 died and two others in their car were badly injured in a Wednesday collision that shut down a Lemon Grove intersection for eight hours, sheriff’s officials said.
Their names were not released. Some were siblings and others were cousins, sheriff’s Sgt. Jorge Dueño said.
Two of four terrier-mix dogs in the car with them also died.
The adult male driver of an SUV involved in the collision was evaluated at a hospital and released.
The five young people were in a 2006 Acura driven by a 20-year-old woman, Dueño said.
They were making a left turn from north Lemon Grove Avenue to west Massachusetts Avenue about 4 p.m. when they were broadsided by a southbound 2003 Dodge Durango SUV, Dueño said.
Investigators had not determined which driver was at fault. Dueño said one of the drivers would have had a red light.
Two passengers in the Acura, an 18-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, died in the wreckage along with two dogs. An 8-year-old girl was taken to a hospital where she later died.
The fourth passenger, a 4-year-old girl, was hospitalized and listed in critical condition. The injured driver also was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, Dueño said.
Animal control officers were called to assist with the rescue.
