Statesville, NC : Man accused of causing a crash on Interstate 40 on Saturday, June 3, 2017
Statesville, North Carolina
The man accused of causing a crash on Interstate 40 on Thursday that killed a motorcycle passenger was located Saturday morning in Harnett County, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
Ronald Jason Gibson, 38, of Angier, will be charged with felony hit and run causing serious injury, felony hit and run causing death, reckless driving and aggressive driving. He was given a $200,000 secured bond.
Trooper S. Stevenson thanked the public for their help locating the suspect.
"If it wasn't for the leads we got from the public, we wouldn't have found him nearly as quickly," Stevenson said.
Stevenson wouldn't release the names of the victims because, he said, some distant family members may not have been notified. The names will be publicly released in a few days when the crash report is released.
The wreck occurred around 4 p.m. near the 158 mile marker in the westbound lanes. Stevenson said a minivan merged into the left lane, causing the motorcycle to run off the road and crash, ejecting the driver and a passenger.
The male driver of the motorcycle was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem in stable condition, Stevenson said. His female passenger was transported to Davis Regional Medical Center, where she died.
Both were wearing helmets.
The minivan driver left the scene, and the highway patrol released a description of the vehicle asking for the public's help identifying the driver.
The motorcycle driver is recovering and "doing better," Stevenson said. He will still need to undergo surgery.
Gibson's first court appearance will be Tuesday. He could appear in either Harnett court or Iredell court.
