Shirley, NY : Bicyclist hit, killed while trying to cross highway on Long Island on Wednesday, December 30, 2015

Police on Long Island say a bicyclist was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle while trying to cross the Montauk Highway.

Newsday reports the man was hit by a Toyota Highlander in Shirley around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The victim was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities didn't immediately identify the man.

The SUV's driver wasn't hurt and remained on the scene.
