Two Oroville residents were involved in an accident Wednesday night that left a passenger dead in the other vehicle.

Jennifer Alford, 40, of Oroville was driving southbound on Highway 99 with passenger Stephen Alford, 36, of Oroville about 10:30 p.m. near West Catlett Road.

A vehicle driven by Rafiullah Amiri, 29, of Rancho Cordova was going westbound on West Catlett Road and was waiting to cross the road. For an unknown reason, he entered the southbound lanes of Highway 99 directly ahead of Alford, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Alford was unable to brake or swerve before the front of her vehicle hit the right side of Amiri’s vehicle.

A 22-year-old male passenger from Loomis in Amiri’s vehicle was killed by the collision. His name has not been released.

Amiri and Joseph Leroy Doub Jr., 52, of Asheboro. N.C., both sustained major injuries and were transported by ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Jennifer Alford sustained minor injuries, but was not transported to medical care. Stephen Alford sustained major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Rideout Hospital in Marysville.

No one was arrested. All passengers were wearing seat belts, and alcohol or drugs are not believed to have been a factor, according to the CHP.
