A mother and her 4-year-old son died Monday afternoon (July 27) after a head-on collision in Plaquemines Parish, according to State Police Trooper Dustin Dwight.The two-vehicle crash occurred about 12:40 p.m. Monday on LA 23, about two miles south of Lake Hermitage, according to Plaquemines Sheriff's Office Cmdr. Eric Becnel.Jenny Taing, 25, and her 4-year-old son -- who sat in the back seat -- were traveling north on LA 23 in a Toyota Scion. For unknown reasons, Taing crossed the median and entered the southbound lane where she was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser.Taing and her child died in the crash. The child was not in a car seat but was wearing a seatbelt, troopers said.A 6-year-old boy, a passenger in the Land Cruiser, was in critical condition at Ochsner Medical Center, Dwight said. His father, William Weidner, 38, was driving the vehicle during the crash and suffered minor injuries.Troopers do not expect impairment on either driver, but blood samples were taken and will be analyzed at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, investigators said.
