Tallahassee,FL : Florida Legislature approves settlement in fatal school bus crash on may, Friday 19th 2017

The St. Lucie County School District must pay Aaron Beauchamp's mother more than $1 million for her 9-year-old son's death in a 2012 school bus crash.

The state Senate on Friday passed a bill by Rep. Cord Byrd requiring the district pay Lillian Beauchamp $1.5 million for the wrongful death of Aaron as result of negligence of the school district.

A judge awarded the family $8.7 million in 2015 after a jury found the district was mostly at fault in the school bus collision with a tractor-trailer, but state law requires legislative approval when a government entity is required to pay more than $300,000 in damages. The $1.5 million came out of negotiations between the family and the school district.

The district reached the cap when it paid the families of other children hurt in the crash, leaving the Beauchamps with nothing from the district, according to the bill.
