A 16-year-old boy died after his pickup truck collided with an Etowah County school bus Thursday afternoon.
The crash happened about 2:45 p.m. on Highway 132, between Warrior Valley Road and Thompson Drive in Altoona.
The drivers of the bus and pickup truck were airlifted to Birmingham hospitals.
The pickup driver, Trenton Gibbs, a student at West End High School, died from his injuries at the hospital just before 5 p.m.
Two students on the bus were not injured but were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
A teacher's aide on the bus was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gibbs family during this difficult time," Etowah County Superintendent Dr. Alan Cosby said. "Our prayers also go out to the bus driver, aide, students and their families."
Chaplains with the Etowah County Sheriff's Office are on hand at the West End High School commencement ceremony Thursday night.
"Losing a loved one is never easy, especially a child. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved," Sheriff Todd Entrekin said. "My office will do our best to support the school system and students in the coming days, weeks and months ahead."
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Altoona Police Department, A-Med Ambulance, Altoona Volunteer Fire Department, Egypt Volunteer Fire Department, Walnut Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Gadsden Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigators, Alabama Department of Transportation and Etowah County Board of Education personnel.
