Springfield, MO : Man killed after being hit by truck in north Springfield on Saturday, December 3, 2016

A 78-year-old Springfield man is dead after a truck hit him as he was walking across the street near a nursing home.

Troopers said the 60-year-old man driving the truck who hit and killed Hubert House is not at fault

"It's early in the investigation, but we don't have any reason to believe there would be any criminal charges whatsoever," said Missouri State Highway Patrol, Lieutenant Dan Bracker.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday near Woodland Manor at Fremont and Valley Water Mill Road.

Reporter Stephanie Garland talked with the man who was driving the pickup truck. While he nor the woman riding with him wanted to go on camera, they said the man was walking in the middle of the street. They swerved and hit him on the passenger side of the car and he ended up dying.

Again, troopers said they are not pursuing criminal charges against the couple in the truck.

"Peaceful and quiet. Not much of anything happens down here," said Cory Willhite, who lives near where House died.

Willhite lives two houses down from where the intersection where 78-year-old Hubert House died Saturday night. He sees many people walk across the intersection near his home daily, but Saturday was different.

"People don't usually get hit out here," Willhite said.

This is the state trooper investigating this crash, Lieutenant Dan Bracker.

"It's very cut and dry unfortunately," Lt. Bracker explained. "A preliminary investigation shows they were going the speed limit or under."

Willhite does not want this to happen to anyone else.

He hopes someone adds…

"A caution sign people walking," Willhite said. "To make people aware of people walking."

So this does not happen again.

"People's lives are at stake," finished Willhite.

Troopers said House wore dark clothes without any reflective gear.

The crash report shows the 60-year-old man who hit and killed House did not have insurance.

Court records show Hubert House used to live close to there.

Neighbors said they believe House got hit while on his way to the nursing home... after visiting with his ex-wife.
