KOEHLER TOWNSHIP, MI : 17-year-old Onaway woman killed in car accident on Thursday, November, 30th 2017
17-year-old Alexia LaHaie from Onaway was killed Thursday morning when she lost control on icy roads and crossed sideways into the path of a box truck.
Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont said his department was dispatched to the fatal car accident at 5:53 a.m. on M-68 near Walker Road. At the time of arrival, deputies observed that M-68 was icy due to the recent rain freezing on the roadway.
The investigation revealed that LaHaie was traveling westbound on M-68 when it appears she lost control of her vehicle due to the icy road conditions and crossed sideways into the path of a 1998 Isuzu box truck, driven by 26-year-old Arteen Stout of Prudenville.
LaHaie was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a very tragic accident that took the life of a promising young lady,” said Clarmont. “Alexia’s family and school have been notified and at this time, our thoughts and prayers are with her family and classmates.”
Stout recieved minor injuries and was released after being treated at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital’s Cheboygan Campus.
“Mr. Stout provided a statement as to what occurred and he could not avoid the accident,” said Clarmont. “He was very shook up. We had his family come up and assist him in coping with the situation.”
M-68 was closed for seven hours and rerouted down Montgomery Road and Walker Road while the investigation at the scene took place.
“At this time, we believe there are no other factors that contributed to the accident, but the investigation is ongoing,” said Clarmont.
The sheriff’s department was assisted on the scene by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department Accident Investigation Team, the Michigan State Police, Forest Waverly Fire Department, Tuscarora Township Fire Department and Cheboygan Life Support Systems ambulance.
