Trenton, ME : Driver of a motorcycle that was hit by a car on Route 3 Wednesday afternoon was taken by LifeFlight helicopter on September 10th 2014
The driver of a motorcycle that was hit by a car on Route 3 Wednesday afternoon was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to a Bangor hospital due to a head injury.
The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of the Jordan River Road and Route 3. Deputy Travis Frost of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office said Lindsey Grindle, 26, of Franklin was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Route 3, while a motorcycle driven by 35-year-old Wayne Taylor of Trenton was headed south on the state highway.
Frost said another car was turning right onto Route 3 from Jordan River Road at the same time Grindle was turning left, and that Grindle failed to see the motorcycle because the other car obstructed her view.
Grindle's Chevrolet Cruze collided with Taylor's motorcycle when Grindle pulled out of the intersection. The motorcycle went into the ditch, and Taylor and his passenger, 34-year-old Sarah Watt of Trenton, were both thrown from the bike. Frost said neither Taylor nor Watt was wearing a helmet.
Both Taylor and Watt were initially taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital (MCMH) in Ellsworth by County Ambulance. Speaking around 7 p.m. Wednesday, Frost said Watt remained at the Ellsworth hospital where she was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Frost said Taylor's most significant injury was to his head, and that as a result he was taken from MCMH to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by helicopter. Frost said it appeared Taylor's injuries were also non-life threatening.
Grindle was uninjured in the crash, according to Frost, as were two children – ages 4 and 6 – who were passengers in her car. Both the motorcycle and the car had to be removed from the scene by flatbed trucks.
The crash caused both lanes of busy Route 3 to be shut down for about an hour. Although traffic was rerouted through the parking lot of adjacent businesses, it moved slowly and cars were still backed up in both directions while the scene was being cleared.
Trenton Fire Department provided traffic control at the scene. Lt. Pat Kane of the Sheriff's Office, speaking at the scene, said first responders “got here quickly, had a plan and did a great job”.
