Medina, OH : Five hurt in 6-vehicle crash in Brunswick on Friday afternoon, December 16, 2016

A man is in custody following a multi-vehicle crash in Brunswick that sent five people to the hospital Friday afternoon. At 1:05 p.m., Brunswick police and EMS responded to the 1500 block of Pearl Road for a six-vehicle accident. Officers said when they arrived at the scene the corridor was “chaos.”

Steve Parker, 37, of Brunswick, said he was stopped at a red light with a line of cars in front of him when he was “slammed in the back” by a cement truck. Parker was driving an All Construction Services box truck with Robert Nonamaker, 21, of Litchfield Township, in the passenger seat. Both are employees at the Brunswick location.

“The light just changed green and we were all getting ready to go,” Parker said. “I looked in my rearview mirror and saw the cement truck wasn’t stopping.

“He pushed us so fast with momentum that we turned and took out the (utility) pole. I don’t think I even turned the wheel. It happened so fast.”

Neither Parker nor Nonamaker were injured.

Police said in a press release the driver of the cement truck was taken into custody and tests were conducted by a drug recognition expert. His name and medical condition were not immediately available Friday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Five people were transported to Southwest General Hospital in Brunswick for injuries. Their names and medical conditions were not immediately available Friday.

One vehicle was damaged by the utility pole and downed power lines.

Officers closed Pearl Road (U.S. route 42) to southbound traffic from Center Road (state Route 303) and to northbound traffic from Laurel Road following the crash. It reopened about 4 p.m.

Ohio Edison arrived on scene to replace the utility pole and repair the wires. Officials said no surrounding businesses or residents were affected with power loss.
