EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, MO : Shocking motorcycle crash caught on camera on May 14th 2014
Excelsior Springs, Missouri
A motorcyclist who survived a dramatic crash captured on camera hopes the video shows drivers they need to be more careful, and there are a lot of bikers like him out on the road.
Excelsior Springs police posted the video of the May 9 wreck from the intersection of Crown Hill Road and Highway 10.
Officers say 20-year-old Britt Hamilton may not be alive if he wasn't wearing a helmet.
Hamilton has seen the video captured by a traffic camera and can't believe he walked away.
"I hit, and then went numb for a second. Then I started to feel pain," he said.
Hamilton said he hit his brakes, but it was too late.
"I had a green light. I guess she got scared and slammed on the brakes," he said.
The video shows the intense impact, Hamilton's shoe flew off his foot, and he was thrown from his bike.
"My wrist is swollen. My lip is messed up a little bit. I got a little knot on my leg," Hamilton said. "I'm surprised I didn't get a broken bone or something."
People from nearby restaurants and cars who saw the crash are seen running to the aid of Hamilton.
Hamilton said he wishes he could have thanked them, but he was rushed to the hospital.
The bike actually looks OK from far away, but Hamilton said it has some major damage.
"The frame is pushed up into the engine, cracked radiator. It pushed the gas tank into the back seat," he said.
Hamilton's father says the bike was just painted three days ago.
Hamilton was wearing a helmet, which is Missouri law.
"I've always had a helmet," he said.
Hamilton's fiancee, Brittany Pennington, and his 10-month-old baby girl, Peyton, were in the car right behind him.
"It's something I never want to witness again," Pennington said.
Experiencing the accident and watching the crash video now, the couple realize it could have been so much worse.
"Just a scary thought knowing I could have lost him," Pennington said.
Hamilton said he hopes the video will remind drivers to watch out for motorcycles.
"It could have been a lot worse. I'm glad it turned out the way it did," he said.
Excelsior Springs police said the driver who hit the motorcyclist had a learner's permit.
Officers also said the accident is under investigation, but a full accident report should be complete by the end of the week. Any charges could come then.
