Interstate 26 is closed to traffic between Spartanburg and Hendersonville due to a collision involving two tanker trucks and an explosion, according to two news outlets.
The N.C. Department of Transportation is reporting that I-26 is closed at Mile Marker 61 in Polk County in both directions.
The crash occurred after 10 p.m. about two miles east of Exit 59 in the Saluda area.
Two 18-wheel tankers crashed and exploded, according to WSPA in Spartanburg.
One of the tankers was hauling butane, according to WLOS in Asheville.
NCDOT was expecting the interstate to be closed through at least 1 a.m. Saturday, according to its website.
The Transportation Department is recommending drivers take a substantial detour.
Motorists traveling toward Asheville are advised to take Exit 19-A in Spartanburg County for Interstate 85 to U.S. Highway 25 North, and follow it until it rejoins I-26 past Saluda.
Motorists traveling toward Spartanburg are advised to take Exit 54 in Flat Rock and follow U.S. Highway 25 South to I-85 until it reconnects with I-26 in South Carolina.
