The Latest on a crash that killed three people and injured two on a U.S highway in Utah (all times local):

4:40 p.m.

The Utah Highway Patrol says three people died and two are hospitalized after a head-on crash on a U.S. highway in Utah.

Sgt. Todd Royce said Tuesday a woman remains in extremely critical condition and a man is being treated for injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening after the crash about 7:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 40 near Heber City.

Royce says it’s not clear yet why a Honda sedan crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Kia, but both cars were traveling faster than the speed limit.

The drivers of both cars died, along with a female passenger in the Honda.

The names of the dead and injured weren’t immediately made public.

12:40 p.m.

Authorities say three people are dead and at least one person was hurt in a head-on crash on a U.S. highway in Utah.

State Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce tells KSL-TV (http://bit.ly/2kGWji5) the crash happened about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 40 near Heber City.

Royce didn’t immediately respond to a message from The Associated Press.

Patrol Lt. Harley Watkins tells KSL that investigators didn’t immediately know why one vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, but says it appears both cars were traveling over the speed limit.

Police say a man and two women were in one vehicle and a man and woman in the other.

The names of the dead and injured weren’t immediately made public.

The highway was closed for several hours while authorities investigated.
