Fremont, CA : Wrong way driver killed and three injured in fiery crash on I-880 in Fremont on Friday, February 6, 2015
A 22-year-old Santa Clara woman who drove about five miles the wrong way on southbound Interstate 880 died early Friday when her car crashed head-on into a pickup truck near Thornton Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported at 12:33 a.m., according to the CHP, and blocked all the southbound lanes of the freeway.
The woman's car, a 1999 Volvo sedan, was on fire when authorities arrived. Officers and other motorists attempted unsuccessfully to put out the fire. There were no other passengers in her car, the CHP said.
The three occupants of the pickup truck, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, all suffered major injuries and were taken to area hospitals.
A preliminary CHP investigation shows the woman entered the freeway going the wrong way northbound at Auto Mall Parkway and managed to avoid hitting any cars while driving south until she hit the pickup truck.
