Corpus Christi, TX : 41-year-old man died in vehicle crash Sunday October 9 2016
A 41-year-old man died in a wreck after the vehicle he was riding in struck the back of another car and crashed into a concrete pillar at the intersection of South Padre Island Drive and Weber Road.
Corpus Christi officers arrived about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3900 block of SPID to investigate the wreck, which involved a 39-year-old man driving a Toyota car into the concrete pillar after taking the eastbound Weber Road exit, according to a Corpus Christi police news release.
Witnesses told police the Toyota was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the back of a Nissan passenger car in the left lane on the SPID access road at the Weber Road exit. The Toyota also hit the exit sign, and the Nissan went into the intersection at SPID and Weber Road, the release states.
The 37-year-old driver of the Nissan suffered minor injuries, and the driver of the Toyota was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial for treatment, the release states.
Investigators believe alcohol may be a contributing factor in the crash.
The driver of the Toyota was placed on guard duty at the hospital, but it was discontinued Monday because that man's injuries are expected to be significant, requiring extended medical care, Corpus Christi police Senior Officer Kirk Stowers said.
The man faces a charge on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter, police said.
Police plan to send the case to the Nueces County District Attorney's Office, which will present the case to a grand jury at a future date, Stowers said.
