The South Carolina Highway Patrol released details of a crash that killed the driver of an 18-wheeler on Interstate 85 Tuesday morning.
The Anderson County Coroner's Office identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as Kevin D. Lewis, 39, of Fountain Inn.
The wreck happened around 5 a.m., 1 mile north of Exit 35 just before the Highway 86 exit.
Lewis was driving an 18-wheeler on I-85 southbound and was unable to stop for a disabled Freightliner garbage truck in the third lane. Lewis' tractor-trailer struck the garbage truck from behind and caught fire, Cpl. Bill Rhyne, of the Highway Patrol, said.
The driver of the garbage truck and a passenger were transported to an area hospital for their injuries.
A third vehicle was struck by debris from the crash, but no one from that vehicle was injured, Rhyne said.
