Charlotte,NC : Woman was injured after she was struck by a vehicle in southwest Charlotte on Monday morning September 22nd 2014
Charlotte, North Carolina
A Charlotte-based company is revealing new information about a woman who was struck by a vehicle in southwest Charlotte Monday morning. They say it appears she was on the phone when she was hit.
WBTV was on the scene Monday morning as emergency crews transported a woman from a crash site in southwest Mecklenburg County. Officials say she may have been struck while trying to cross the road.
Officials said the the victim was air-lifted to Carolinas Medical Center-Main with serious injuries. Her condition was upgraded before 3 p.m., and she is expected to be okay.
According to MEDIC, the woman was struck along the 15000-block of Choate Circle near Carowinds Blvd around 8 a.m. Monday morning.
Witnesses say the driver, who was taking his son to school, didn't see the pedestrian because of the angle of the sun.
Many say the area is not pedestrian-friendly. "In the morning time, I live on one of the side streets, and to turn is a major thing," said Julie Adams, "Maybe between 7 and 8, 8:30 it's really really difficult."
Julie Adams and her friend Mary Ann Peterson said Choate Circle is used by a lot of cars as a cut through.
"There's a lot of traffic at that particular time. I think it is a risk when you don't have a sidewalk," said Adams.
Police originally believed the victim was heading to work at nearby Stanley Black and Decker but she actually works for a cleaning company.
C and C Commercial Cleaning Inc said in an email to WBTV's Pam Escobar, "it appears she was on her phone and walked into the road, which is narrow and has blind spots."
Without giving up too many details, a C and C representative indicated that the victim would recover from her injuries, "we are all very upset and praying for her. We ask you to do the same".
