Norfolk, VA : Man driving scooter dies in Virginia Beach crash near the Hilltop area Thursday morning, August 18, 2016

A Virginia Beach man driving a scooter died Thursday morning in a crash near the Hilltop area.

About 11:45 a.m., emergency crews were called for a crash at the intersection of Gloria Place and Wolfsnare Road, not far from First Colonial Road.

Investigators determined a 2003 Ford Windstar minivan traveling west on Wolfsnare turned left toward Gloria Place in front of a 2012 Tao Tao scooter traveling east, police spokeswoman Tonya Pierce wrote in an email. The scooter’s driver, David Benabou, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van’s driver, who was not named, was charged with failing to yield while turning left.

Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor, police said.
