Memphis ,TN : Driver charged with DUI after 12-year-old injured in hit-and-run crash on Saturday ,May 2 2015
A 12-year-old boy is recovering after a driver hit him while he was riding his bicycle, then left the scene.
“It hit him so hard, it sounded like a car, somebody hitting a car,” said witness Dennis Taylor
But it was 12-year-old Rahim Davis on his bicycle riding in front of a store in the Binghampton area. Police markings on the street show the 12-year-old was thrown.
“It was just really a horrific scene,” Taylor added. He says he was in front of the store cooking fish for a fish fry when it happened around 8 p.m. Saturday.
Taylor said the driver of the car stopped and got out of his car.
“He got back in his car and said he was going to pull the car around and that's when me and everybody else was trying to get his driver's tag number.”
Police arrested 51-year-old Jerry Guy and charged him with vehicular assault, DUI, driving on a suspended or revoked license, as well as having no driver's license and leaving the scene of an accident.
“It was devastating. It was awful,” said Megan Banaszek, who works with the Carpenter Art Garden.
She says Rahim came to the garden every day.
“Very involved in all the programs. We have a lot of people here who care about Rahim here.”
Banaszek says cars speed in the area all the time, and Rahim's family hopes what happened to him will make people think.
“There's a lot of kids in this neighborhood on these streets where schools are," Banaszek added.
Jerry Guy is being held on a $45,000 bond.
